University of Granada (UGR)
Department of Signal Theory, Networking and Communications

Welcome to my website!

I am a ‘Ramón y Cajal’ Research Professor in the Department of Signal Theory, Networking and Communications at University of Granada (UGR), Spain, where I conduct research on the broad area of statistical signal processing, with cross-disciplinary applications to wireless communications, machine learning and computational biology, among others. Here you will find details of my research and academic activities.

Highlights

Senior Area Editor of IEEE Trans. Signal Processing

Since Feb 2024, I am a Senior Area Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. I am thrilled to continue serving (now as SAE) the board of the IEEE flagship journal in the signal processing area.

'Ramón y Cajal' Fellow

I have been honoured with a "Ramón y Cajal" (RyC) Fellowship and, since March 2022, I am a RyC Research Professor at UGR. The fellowship, given by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, includes a 5-year employment grant and funding for my research, leading up to tenured professorship.

SPCOM Technical Committee: Elected Member

Since January 2020, I am an elected member of the Technical Committee on Signal Processing for Communications and Networking (SPCOM) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

PhD and Postdoc Positions

Interested in joining the team? Potential PhD and Postdoc candidates are welcome to show their interest anytime. External funding sources both from the Spanish government and EU are periodically available (e.g., Spanish FPI/FPU and EU Marie Curie Fellowships) and can be applied for. Please send me an email with your CV, research interests and main academic references.

Research Focus

My main research activities lie within the wide area of statistical signal processing, with diverse multi-disciplinary applications to wireless communications and computational biology, among others. With a focus on random matrix theory (RMT) and high-dimensional statistics, my research is aimed at providing robust signal processing solutions and data science (machine learning) methods suited to the large-dimensional nature of contemporary data. I am particularly very interested in: 1) robust estimation and detection solutions to address challenges posed by the ever-growing dimensions (e.g., users, antennas) of wireless networks and their associated technologies (e.g., massive MIMO, IoT, large sensor networks), and 2) computational inference methods that help understanding the complex dynamics of biological systems such as HIV or HCV viruses.

These activities are highly collaborative, involving a network of renowned researchers from world-leading institutions. Dynamic collaborations are in place with the Signal Processing and Computational Biology Group (SPCB), led by Prof. Matthew McKay at HKUST (Hong Kong) and at University of Melbourne (Australia), with Prof. Iain Johnstone at Statistics, Stanford University, and with Prof. Kit Wong at University College London, among others.

Research Interests (at a glance)

  • Random matrix theory and high-dimensional statistics
  • Inference methods in high-dimensional settings (big data)
  • Computational biology and immunology
  • Robust estimation and detection theories
  • Signal processing aspects of large-dimensional wireless networks and their technologies
  • Channel modeling and performance analysis of wireless communications

Brief Bio

I received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunication Technologies from University of Málaga (Spain) in 2008 and 2011, respectively, being subsequently awarded with the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award in Electrical and Computer Engineering for my research on the analysis and design of 4G multi-antenna systems. My career has since been shaped by quite an international and exciting journey: I was a Postdoctoral Fellow (2011-2014) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona; I then joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), first as a Visiting Scholar (2014-2016) and then as Research Assistant Professor (2016-2018); I was an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) at Queen’s University Belfast (2018-2021) and an Associate Professor at University of Málaga (2021-2022). Since March 2022 I am a ‘Ramón y Cajal’ Research Professor in the Department of Signal Theory, Networking and Communications at University of Granada (Spain). During 2010 and 2015, I held respective visiting appointments at University College London, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, hosted by Prof. Kit Wong, and at Stanford University, Department of Statistics, hosted by Prof. Iain M. Johnstone.

I am an IEEE Senior Member, an Elected Member of the Technical Committee on Signal Processing for Communications and Networking (SPCOM) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. I have further served in the Technical Program Committee of multiple IEEE Signal Processing and Wireless Communications conferences, including ICASSP, SPAWC, ICC and GLOBECOM.
